Links in doc no longer work after upgrading Word2K to Word 2003

Error message says: cannot open specified file
The link is provided below. I will say that it is much longer than this.
Also using IE7 Is this a Word thing or an IE7 thing or a Office 2003 sp3
thing?

.../../../folder/folder/folder/file

Links that worked fine in 2000 now do not work.

I use XP pro sp2, Office Pro 2003 sp3
