Links in e-mails default to homepage

I am running Windows XP, Home Edition, with MS Office 2003, with SP2
installed from a CD (but not on the machine from which I am sending this
post). After allowing the system to download and install a whole slew of
updates for Office 2003 (including SP3), I noticed that clicking on any link
in any e-mail defaults me to my internet homepage, even though the correct
link URL is displayed when I hover the cursor over the link. (BTW -
clicking on links from any website works correctly.)

I tried to narrow down which update was giving me the problem. To do this
required uninstalling and reinstalling Office 2003 several times.
Unfortunately it appears that different updates will trigger the problem on
successive installation cycles (including SP3, which caused this to happen
after one uninstall/reinstall cycle, where it previously hadn't).

What's going on? What can I do to make the link work correctly? I would
like to install all of the post-SP2 updates, but am afraid to, because it
will invariably mess up my ability to click on links in e-mails to visit
sites of interest.
