Hi

Not sure if this is in the right part of the forum, but
here goes anyway.

I have a document in Word that has numerous different
sections - 1, 2, 2.1, 2.2, 3, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4 etc.

Within these sections, I have bits of text within a
paragraph that may instruct the reader to look at other
sections of the document; for example in the text section
of Section 2.1, it may read "for more detailed
instructions, please see Section 3.3".

The problem I have is that I am still adding in new
Sections, so if I add in a New Section 3.2, the old
Section 3.3 now becomes Section 3.4, but my text in
Section 2.1 still refers to Section 3.3, which is of
course wrong.

Is there anyway of automating something like this?

Gary,

Yes this can be automated using cross references. You
should be using OUTLINE Numbering in your document

See:

html

For a quick example of how cross references work open a
blank document. Click Format>Bullets and Numbering (note
I would never recommend using this for other than this
simple test. See above.) Choose one of the numbering
styles. Type a few numbered lines. At the end of line 1,
type "refer to" and then click Insert>Cross Reference.
Choose "numberered items" and click on the step you want
to refer to and click insert (e.g. 3).

Now say you enter more text between 2 and 3 and your
previous 3 changes to 4. To update the cross reference,
press CTRL+a (to select all fields) then press F9 to
update fields. The cross reference changes from 3 to 4
