liscensing issue?

Hi--When I try to use Word while other people are using it near me (on
a wireless internet connection in a classroom, for example), Word tells
me that too many instillations have taken place on one network and that
it will quit. I can disable my Mac Aiport (wireless connector) and
Word will run fine, but as soon as I try to access the internet again
it closes. This does not happen when I'm connected to the
internet/network in a room by cable. Any suggestions on how to resolve
this? Is there a way to disable Word from accessing the internet?

Hi,
Word, and as a matter of fact any other Office program, will check if
there's another copy of Office with the same registration key running on the
network. If it can detect such a copy, it will, depending on the situation,
either refuse to launch or prevent other copies from launching. This has
nothing to do with the internet; it's related to the network you're
connected to. As you have found out, Word cannot find other copies when it
is not connected to the network (obviously). I'd also guess that the cable
network is separate from the wireless network, which is why you do not
experience that same behaviour in that situation. There is no way of
preventing Office apps from performing the network check; it's simply one of
the built-in tools designed to prevent software piracy. The only solution
(apart from disconnecting from the network) would be to get more licenses
for Office.

You might ask your university. Where did this copy of Word come from? If
it's a copy you got from the university and it runs on the university's
volume license, they ought to know that they need to do something about
this. They probably set up the numbers allowed when wireless wasn't so
prevalent and fewer people had laptops.
