List Number "corruption" in a Master Document

I am working with 14 sub-documents in using a Master
Document.

I use Numbered lists in various sub-documents which are
reset to 1 each time.

However, after saving and closing the file(s), the numbers
seem to forget the resets entirely or in part. It looks
like a corruption to me -- and I know Word98 had a patch
that fixed this problem.

Can anyone tell me where to find a patch for Word 2002
running on Home Edition XP? Or give me another fix to this
problem?

Master documents are prone to corruption. The function simply doesn't work
well -

Julie,

the good new... your document probably isn't corrupt.... the bad news is
that this simply is a bug.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;292073
implies that there is a workaround, but what it isn't clear about is that
the workaround doesn't stick..you have to redo it everytime you open the
doc.
