list numbering withing outline numbering

I’m using Word 2002 on a Windows 2000 network to create complex technical document templates for use by my coworkers. We use an outlined number system of headings, level 1, level 1.1, level 1.1.1, etc. (up to level 7, yuck!) Within any of these level/headings we may need to use a list numbered a, b, c, etc. Within the a, b, c list we may need to use a sub-list numbered 1, 2, 3, etc. So a typical paragraph may look like this:

1.1 Level 2 Headin
tex
1.1.1 Level 3 Headin
tex
a. tex
1. tex
2. tex
b. tex
1.2 Level 2 Headin
a. tex
b. tex

I need two things
1. a stable way to control the numbered list
2. a stable way to cross reference the numbered list

I’ve read Margaret Alids’ article “Restarting list numbering using LISTNUM fields†and I think using her field {LISTNUM \l 1 \s 0} is the best way to do this, but I don’t know how to make sure other users of my template do this. I’m not very familiar with using fields, VBA, or macros, so I need some simple directions.

As for the cross referencing, to set a cross reference for paragraph 1.1.1.b, I’ve been setting two cross references. One for paragraph 1.1.1 and one for paragraph b. Is this the best procedure

Sorry about the typo; that should be "within" not "withing

In Margaret's article she states, "you could provide a 'start list' macro that sets the style of the current item to the numbered style, and inserts the field at the end of the next previous paragraph of this style"

Can someone give me this macro or show me how to create it

I prefer Word's built-in numbering. Ensure you have a list outline
style to hold this formatting. If you don't use styles, lists are much
more temperamental.

Wherever you want to x-ref, place a bookmark and ref to the bookmark.

An alternative in 2002 is to use the new List Styles - I have avoided
these so far

We make ONE list and ONE list only.

The a's and i's are level 2 and level 3 of the list. This means they
can be set to restart on the higher list level.

One outline list contains 9 levels.

It still doesn't work. I may put an a, b, c, list at any level and it only restarts after level 1.

If you don't want to manually start after headings you have several
options.

Use my RestartNumberingAfterHeadings code from wherever it is these
days

Set your 'lists' to actually be headings 8 & 9 styled as body text and
not including the prefix of the preceding headings
