List of tables, list of figures...numbering issue

What's the trick to create separate lists of tables, figures, and
appendices. I created a captions for each (Table, Figure, Appendix).
Inserted a "list of figures" to create each list using the appropriate
labels, with the tick box checked to include label and num. All was well,
three separate lists with correct numbering (letters for the list of
append.) - except for the repetitious silly labels that I want to omit. A
hypothetical quick fix would be separate tick boxes for label (which I don't
want) and number (which I do want). In my feeble attempt to correct, I
unticked the box and modified the "Table of Figures" style to add numbering
and recreated each of the three tables... which are now all consecutively
numbered from the first list though the last. Thanks again... your
assistance is appreciated.

You are on the right track with numbering the Table of Figures style, but
you need to restart the numbering for each list.

The simplest way of doing this is to include a {listnum \s 0} field at the
end of each of the lists.

You can insert this using Insert > Field and choosing LISTNUM - the \s0 flag
is a restart at zero.

Thank you Margaret... Inserted the {listnum \0} field as
suggested on the line after my list of tables, then
formatted the resulting "0" as hidden text. Perfect...
subsequent list of figures started at 1. After the list
of figures, however, is my list of appendices, labeled
Appendix A, B, C, etc, in the captions. Can I reset the
list to switch from numeric to alpha values? If so, how
would I get the first line of the list of appendices to
begin with A? Thanks...

Hmm, no, this isn't going to work for lettered captions.

The 'normal' way to do the appendices would be to use a separate numbered
(lettered) style for the appendix headings, and pick that up in a TOC. More
info on that in
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/NumberingAppendixes.html

Other possibilities:

If you are using Word 2002 or later, you could modify your current numbering
idea by setting up two (or three) different *list styles*, and applying
those to each of the tables of 'figures' - I don't think the style will
'stick' when you update the table, but it would be quick to reapply.

If you don't have any other captions within your appendices, you could
bookmark the area of the document that contains the appendices and use a /b
switch in the TOC field. See
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/TOCSwitches.htm

You could build a table of contents for the appendices using TC fields (but
you have to keep their text aligned with the appendix titles by hand.)

As usual with Word, lots of approaches that *almost* get you there ;-)
