List style modification is causing lockup in Word 2002

I'm having a fairly vicious little problem with Word 2002. Say I apply a
built in list style to text in a Normal based document (usually 1/ a/ i). I
then create my own list style (say My List) using the the Styles and
Formatting panel, and take "the long way" to modify it - from the bottom of
the style modification dialog Format>Numbering, and from the list gallery
Customize....

I click in the "number format" box to remove the parenthesis for level 1,
backspace to get rid of it, and get a pop up message: "Document is Too Large
for Word to Handle" with the only option is an OK button. Clicking it gets
no response - the application locks up, and has to be forcibly shut down,
with a loss of unsaved changes.

Today, I was following the instructions in Shauna Kelly's guide on setting
up Heading styles for numbering, and the same thing happened - at level 5 I
was attempting to add a parenthesis after the number, and as soon as I typed
it, the message flashed up and locked up the app.

I work in a large organization and have been leading training on how to use
styles. Unfortunately, my example (the first exercise I listed above) locks
up about 1/3 of the workstations on a regular basis - not always the same
ones. The work I was doing today was on my office workstation, so it seems
to be more widespread than my classroom.

Has anyone seen this behavior before? If so, were you able to fix it?
