List styles and text formatting in Word 2003

Is it possible in Word 2003 to specify the style to use for each level
in a list? I would like to have the text at the first level in my list
appear bold without any user action required (with text for all other
levels appearing "normal"), but I'm having a devil of a time actually
accomplishing that.
