listnum error

I want to edit the style of a listnum field that I insert in word xp.
But whenever I right click the listnum and click the Bullets an
numbering, word crashed. I get "Micorsoft word encountered a proble
and need to close..."

What's wrong? Help!!

ListNum fields are not controlled by Bullets and Numbering but by switches
in the field code (these can be inserted using Insert | Field). Paragraph
formatting is handled by Format | Paragraph.

This is a bug in Word XP - it occurs if you also have non-LISTNUM numbering
in the document (for more details, see http://www.knowhow.com/ListNumBug.htm
or google for kaboom and listnum. I'm now on Word 2003 so I don't know if
the latest updates to Word XP fix the bug - worth making sure you are up to
date anyway - see

If what you are trying to do is change the numbering format, you may be able
to work around the problem by setting up the numbering scheme as you want it
using Format > Bullets and Numbering, giving that numbering scheme a LISTNUM
name (this is in the section of the Customize dialog that opens when you
click More...) and then editing the LISTNUM field to refer to that name.
