ListNum Field and Paragraph numbers

J

John T. Riordan

Using Office XP Professional - Word
I want to number each of my paragraphs and have been using
ListNum which numbers the paragraphs according to the
Heading number.

However when I insert a list between paragraphs, the
paragraphs following the list pick-up the paragraph
numbers from the in-between list.

Example:

2. Heading One
2.1 Heading Two
2.1.1 Paragraph One about some interesting stuff
where "2.1.1" is a ListNum field.
i. a list between paras
ii. a list between paras
iii. a list between paras
2.1.2 Paragraph Two this is how I want the paragraph
numbering to work, but instead I am getting this.

1. Paragraph Two (or)
iv. Paragraph Two which seems to be following on from
the "list between paras".

Does anyone have a suggestion that will work?

Thanks in advance,

Hi John

The LISTNUM field continues the last autonumbering numbering scheme used. In
the example you show, it is picking up the numbering used in your list
paragraphs. To make the LISTNUM field use a specfic sequence reliably, you
need to name it in the Customize dialog.

Hope this helps

Thanks for your advice Margaret. Would mind to elaborate on where to find
the Customise dialog? When I have the Field dialog open I click on the
ListNum field and the avaiable switches are shown. I can't find a way to
get a Customise dialog open.

Are you suggesting that I can reference the ListNum field to a particular
Style so that the numbering carries on from that Style and not the last
list?

I have spent most of the day reading through the MVP pages about numbering
and have not found much on how to use ListNum. Perhaps you could suggest
another feature to use to achieve my goal?

Thanks again in advance,
John T. Riordan

You'd probably be better off using the built-in Heading styles for a
job like this. See http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html
for a concise explanation.

However, if you wanted to do everything with LISTNUM fields, your
outline could be done as follows:
{ LISTNUM LegalDefault \L 1 ) 2. Heading One
( LISTNUM LegalDefault \L 2 } 2.1 Heading Two
{ LISTNUM LegalDefault \L 3 } 2.1.1 Paragraph One about some interesting stuff
where "2.1.1" is a ListNum field.
{ LISTNUM NumberDefault \L 9 } i. a list between paras
{ LISTNUM NumberDefault \L 9 } ii. a list between paras
{ LISTNUM NumberDefault \L 9 } iii. a list between paras
{ LISTNUM LegalDefault \L 3 }2.1.2 Paragraph Two this is how I want the paragraph
numbering to work, but instead I am getting this.

1. { LISTNUM LegalDefault \L 1 ) Paragraph Two

Obviously, \L stands for level.

It may look as if LegalDefault and NumberDefault are two different
list templates, but in fact they're the same.
