I am trying to take a collection of recipes and put them into a book
format for the wife. Am having trouble figuring out the chapter, TOC
process.Does anyone have a very short template for me to get started
with. I am using MSword 2000.

TIA

Here's a quick lesson:

Word converts your documents heading styles (heading 1, Heading 2, and so
on) into corresponding TOC Styles (TOC 1, TOC2.)

To prepare a TOC

1. Format text in the document with Heading 1, Heading 2, and/or
Heading 3.

2. Position the insertion point where you want the Table of Contents to
appear,

a. Typically you will need to insert a new page at the top of the
document

b. Be sure to add two or three paragraph returns in the new page and
move your insertion point to the top of the new page

3. From the menu bar Select

a. Insert/Reference/Index and tables

b. Select Table of Contents Tab

c. Click OK command button.

4. To remove a heading level from the TOC, before clicking OK in 3c
above

a. Press the Options button

b. Delete the number in the TOC Level column for the heading level to
remove (do not renumber the remaining levels.)

To Update a Table of Contents

1. RIGHT CLICK: anywhere in the TOC

2. CHOOSE: Update Page Number only, or Update Entire Table
