little icons showing read, unread, sent, forward, reply are gone

For some reason my little icons that indicate whether or not an e-mail has
been forwarded, replied, read, unread, in the inbox or reading pane have
disappeared. I didn't do anything or change views etc. Just one day they
were gone. I probably did something but I can't figure out what.
