Loading an office doc from windows explorer

Opening an office doc, word, excel, etc by double clicking the doc from
windows explorer will bring up the application but will not open the
document. I then have to click on file, open, and click again on the file
to open.

Can anyone let me know what could be causing this and what the fix is?
Apparently the file associations are ok since the application does launch.
