Local formatting affects entire document

I must have enabled some "feature" of in Word 2002 by accident.

When I change one word to "bold" the entire document goes bold. So I select
"undo" and the entire document goes back to normal leaving that one word in bold.

The same behavior occurs for all other types of formatting (such as center and
underline).

I'm not fond of having to select "undo" after each formatting change. How do I
fix this?
