Localhost access problem

I'm using FP 2003 and XP Pro SP2. I've been publishing to and fro between
remote hosts (running FP extensions) and localhost subwebs with no problems.
Suddenly today, when I tried to publish from a remote site to a new subweb
under localhost, first FP complained that some folders and/or files in the
target (localhost) web had identical names to those I was publishing, and to
change the names and try again. All there was in the local web was a couple
of folders created in the process of FP making a new web. Next, when trying
to publish to a localhost subweb, Windows or FP began to ask for a username
and password, and would not accept any administrator level name and pwd. So,
from Frontpage, I'm locked out from localhost and any subwebs. I can still
see the contents from My Network Places (no name or pwd asked for). Can't
find anything in the XP or FP Help systems to give me a hint. It's POSSIBLE
that the host from which I was trying initially to publish (Linux, FP
extensions) was not one I had previously used to publish TO localhost.

Any suggestions very welcome.....

Start by doing some cleanup (see below)
Open your local host root web in FP
If the new subweb folder exists as a subweb right click it to delete it
Then Create the subweb (preferably using Tools Server Admin)
Run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks, and open your new subweb in FP
In Remote site View select your online site you were publishing from
Use the Reverse publish feature (remote to local)
When done select the Open Remote site in FP option

Here are the cleanup steps
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
- in FP 2003 you need to look in the super hidden folder
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache
3) Also delete all IE Temp Files (cache) in
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
