Localhost issue

MikeR

I'm not sure if this is an IIS issue, a FP issue, or more likely, a user misunderstanding.
I have sites on 2 different domains.
I installed IIS and FP extensions on my XP box, so I could develop locally and then
publish to the remote host.

I created a physical directory, and in IIS, created a virtual directory that pointed to
it. When I opened localhost in FP, it didn't see the virtual directory.
Then I created a folder in FP on localhost, opened the remote host in FP and published to
localhost/folder.

This in an effort to keep each of the domain's files separate. What I've detailed here is
for only one of the domains.

After working on the pages in localhost, I published (selectively) back to the remote
host. A folder was created there holding the changed files. I moved them to their correct
location, and had to re-do several links, even after a re-calculate.

What am I doing wrong?

Also, is there a way to locate Inetpub\wwwroot anywhere other than the system drive?

Thanx,
MikeR

Under Windows XP Pro / IIS you are limited to a single root web (http://localhost) and a unlimited
number of subwebs / site (this is how you would create site for each domain)

The FP extensions do not support the use of virtual directories.

Thanks Thomas.
Does creating a subweb mean right clicking on the folder and converting to web?
What will that do to the structure when I publish back to the host?
Any way to get localhost off the system drive?

1. Yes, you can create subwebs, just by right clicking on a folder (this is the way that I created
them)

2. Subwebs can be published as individual root webs to any web server or as subwebs under another
root web or as a nested subweb under site with the FP extensions.

I keep forgetting to ask this...
When I installed IIS, I got extensions 2000. Is the download from MS of extensions 2002
compatible? I've seen a couple of warnings to stay away from it.

Yes, for Windows XP Pro / IIS but not for Windows 2003 Server family.

The downloaded version of FP2002 extensions is not compatible with
IIS6 running on Windows 2003. They are compatible with any IIS5.1 and
earlier server, running on Windows 2000, Windows XP Pro or Windows
NT4.
