localhost problem

Susan

I have Windows XP Pro and FrontPage 2003. I have reinstalled Windows XP Pro
with formatting HD first, etc. I applied SP2 updates using Microsoft CD. I
cannot access localhost.

I am supplying information which may or may not relate but am searching for
where I went wrong.
1) When reinstalling Windows XP pro there was question about setting up as
workgroups or dormain. I chose workgroup.
2) I added the IIS Windows component.
3) I installed FP extensions with exec had from past-- not current.
fpse02_x86_ENG Has this changed? I have problems downloading from internet
due to getting disconnected.

Do I need to do any commands or enable anything?

I try to open localhost with IE and get message:
You do not have permission to make changes to this document. Do you want to
open a read-only copy?

"I installed FP extensions with exec had from past-- not current"

What is "with exec had from past?"

The extensions come with XP Pro, and you have the option to install them
when you install IIS. Or, the most current FP server extensions can be
download and installed from MS:

FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions Support Center:

Administration Guide
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/STS/2001/all/proddocs/en-us/default.mspx

----
1) Download FP 2002 Server Extensions:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnservext/html/fpse02win.asp

2) Download FP2002 Server Extensions Updates (and install in this order):

It is confusing when Microsoft page says "The current version is 5.0.2.2623"
for fpse02_x86_ENG.exe and after you download it, the mouse rollover shows
"version 5.0.2920.0" My old version was the current version.

I have a lot of studying to do. Thanks for all the information.

I have Windows XP Pro, does documentation about Share Point Services really
apply? Do I need to wade through all this documentation too?

Windsun

From what I have seen, very few sites have Sharepoint installed compared to
FP extension. We have 5 sites, none have the Sharepoint. I could be wrong,
but it seems to be mostly an Intranet thing.

No. However FP2003 uses the same messages and dialogs to refer to either. So if you are working on a
server that has the FP2002 extensions, you may see messages referring to SharePoint, and in this
case it be regarding the FP2002 extensions and not SharePoint.

Okay, when I click "Yes" it brings up the page on localhost and says
something about saving files to
C:\Inetpub\wwwroot

I thought I was supposed to publish files to localhost and files then ended
up on C:\Inetpub\wwwroot?

T

Thomas A. Rowe

Correct. When you publish to http://localhost or http://machinename or http://127.0.0.1 the content
is stored in C:\Inetpub\wwwroot

Have trying opening localhost via FP's File Menu | Open Site?

The folder name "http://localhost" isn't accessible.

I get the message whether logged on with Administrator rights or limited
user. There must be some settings for access that I must set up as
administrator.
