Locate Link Browser screen pops after clicking a HTML link in an e

All,

There are quite a lot of issues describing this issue, however after reading
them all and trying all KB articles in the posts, I still have this issue :(

I loaded a couple of security patches and Office updates on January the 28th
2008 and since then I have this issue.

Running XP Prof SP2 and Office 2003.

Tried to install Firefox and made that the default browser and it has the
same issue.
Looked for URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol but it does not exist on my
problem PC, however another PC that is the same setup, doesn't have this
issue and also has no URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol registration, so I
think we can rule that out as issue.

What's left?

dll registrations:
I tried following dll's and found that except mshtml.dll all did register
correctly
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll

mshtml.dll pops the following error when registering:

MsHtml.dll was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found.
This file can not be registered.

I don't know if this legitimate in IE7 as most articles do seem to go up to
IE6.

I have done a re-install m(remove, reboot, install) of office and IE7.

I can't seem to get this working and that's quite frustrating, as I have
some days over 30 mails with html links for issues that need to be checked
and I now have to copy and past the damn link.

Any help is appriciated.

Oh I also tried to re-associate the browser to the html link (through the
Link Browser pop-up) but that only pops an empty browser. However I noticed
that the toolbar for Google is absent when this browser starts, where it is
available in the normal IE7 start.

To find the URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol
- Start
- My Computer
- Tools
- Folder Options
- Select the "File Types" tab
- Look for "(None) URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol"

It is near the TOP of the list.

Thanks, I found that and the settings are:

Action:
open

Application used to perform action:
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome %1

Use DDE is ticked
DDE Message:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,

Application:
IExplore

DDE Application Not Running:
<empty>

Topic:
WWW_OpenURL

To me that seems correct (File and path are correct and there)
So what else then causes the Link Location Browser to pop?
IE7 is the default browser, I found however that it does NOT pop a message
when it is not.

One of the big nasty things of this issue is that the copy and past for
notifications of the link in the e-mail of this topic doesn't work :( so I
have to browse back to this forum or save it in my favorites.

Mine does not have the "%1". The rest agrees with what you see.

Brian,

Thanks, I have done the steps as outlined, but no fun.
I did remove the %1 but that neither made a difference

As I said before, there is a difference in how IE7 opens.
Normally I have a google toolbar in IE7. when it opens IE7 from the link in
the e-mail it pops a IE7 screen where all toolbars are diffrently ordered
form the normal IE7 screen.
Normaly the browser bar states:
Blank Page - Windows Internet Explorer
Which seems to be the one started from C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer

The e-mail opened browser states:
About Blank - Microsoft Internet Explorer
Which seems to be the one started from C:\WINDOWS\ie7

So it looks like the ralation to the web-browser is wrong, now where can I
change the relation to use the right IE7 startup?

I'm confuse as to Microsofts poor housekeeping of programs.

No wonder we need Gigabites of diskspace to maintian the Windows OS alone!!

I have now compared 2 machines on which one the URL still work and there is
absolutely no difference in the Registered File Types between the 2 machines
so what else can cause this?

Another thing is that on the working machine the C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer version is started and not the Microsoft Internet Explorer

So apparently the right version on the broken machine is started, but it
does not get the link / URL information (hence the %1?) I did put back in the
%1 but still no fun.

If the PC belonged to me, I'd rip out everything associated with Google.
With IE7's ability to define search locations, I don't find much need of the
Google Toolbar any more and there are reports of it interfering with
Outlook.

I have seen so many Odd type problems that have occurred
to folks that use the "Google Toolbar". I would suggest to you
that you should remove/uninstall the "Google Toolbar" as part
of your troubleshooting of this problem.

I have been away for a while so I had no time to check.

Unloaded the Google toolbar but no joy at all. Reinstalled Office 2003 No
difference either (yes I have rebooted between un-install and installs :)

What puzzles me is this:
When the Locate Link Browser window popped, I told it where to find the
Internet Explorer. It now opens the IE window but not the link, so it looks
like there is just something missing in the association between Outlook and
IE7.

I try to find back in the registry where the actuall association is, but I
can't find it. So where do I have to look to break the association again and
to reassociate it.

Many thanks

Digged around last night and found that there is a key on the problem machine
that stores the InternetBrowserPath.

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Preferences\InternetBrowserPath

When I remove the key or the value then Outlook pops the 'Locate Link
Browser screen'

On another machine where I do not have the problem this key does not exist.

Both machines are running XP SP2 and Outlook and have ALL the latest
Microsoft XP and Office fixes applied that it could find.

I'm lost and it seems that is no longer has a relation to the registerd file
type settings, as these are all correctly set (I have compared them against
the working XP machine and they are all the same).

So what causes the grief?

Any help is highly appriciated, as I feel that upgrading to office 2007 is
not going to sort this issue. I had one of my colleagues who has Office 2007
send me a screenshot of his registry for his
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Preferences and the key isn't
there either.

Thanks
