locate picture file name

How do you find the source of a picture file or even the name of an
image that has been pasted into Word so you can revise it outside the
application?

You can't. The name is usually not saved there to be found.

If the image is a meta format (e.g. PICT) then the name of the original file
may have been encoded into the image file itself.

Which version of Word and operating system are you working with, and what
format are the images?
