Locating Contact w/ First few letters W/O clicking on a record in Screen Window

I used to be able to click on 'contacts' and start typing
the first few letters of the person I wanted to bring
up. It's stupid, but now I have to click on contacts,
then click on a record in the window--sometimes
accidentally in the body of a record, so my first few
letters get inserted, instead of used for 'jumping' to
the correct record. I have to be careful to highlight an
entire record for the 'jump to' feature to work. Any
insights?
Thanks

Thank you...at least I'm not crazy...

Known issue with some versions of Outlook in which the focus isn't set
correctly when the Contacts Folder is launched. I haven't seen a solution
yet.
