Locating page numbers in headers

My publisher wants the chapter titles centered in the header, even page
numbers on the left, and odd page numbers on the right. I sent sample
pages to them months ago, and they pointed out that I had the page
numbers backwards (odds on left, etc.) It's been so long, now I can't
remember how I set it up. Just now, I was able to simply drag the even
page numbers to the correct place, but I can't seem to get the odds
where I want them. Now I'm not thinking clearly because I'm getting
frustrated. Any and all help will be appreciated.

I'm using Word 2001 and OS 9.2.2.

TIA,
Jim

Jim,

First set the document up to have different headers on the left and right:
Format menu -> Document -> Layout -> Different odd and even.

Don't use text boxes for numbering (your ref to dragging numbers around
shows me you did).

Do this for the two headers: View menu -> Header and footer -> type up the
header or footer and add the page number via the ³#² button on the toolbar
that appears.

Important (I used to experience this in Word 2001): If you include the word
³Page² before the page number, then after applying page numbers in the
headers or footers, check in case the space between "Page" and the page
number has disappeared. If the space has been deleted, this will be a
consequence of having "Smart cut and paste" switched on (Edit menu ->
Preferences ... -> Edit). But smart cut and paste is so useful in other
regards that it's better to just check for this idiosyncrasy.

To continue page numbering shown in the header or footer, or to re-start at
1 (you can also specify here whether the page number is shown as "i" or "1"
and so on), see page 58 of the notes on the way I use Word for the Mac,
titled "Bend Word to Your Will", which are available as a free download
from the Word MVPs' website
(http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/Bend/BendWord.htm).

newsgroup for several days after the first response comes in. Sometimes it
takes a few responses before the best or complete solution is proposed;
sometimes you'll be asked for further information so that a better answer
can be provided. Good tips about getting the best out of posting are at

you a blank page the first time, you may need to hit the circular arrow icon
-- "Reload the current page" -- a few times).

Thanks Clive. Your advice worked.

I used to get your advice on the Word for Mac list before its demise,
and I'm a great fan of Bend Word to Your Will. But somehow I got
stumped on this. Maybe I was just too tired.

Hi Jim-

If I'm reading you right-

Unless you changed the default tab settings in your header you should simply
be able to go to the Odd Page Header, select the page # info only & delete
it. If the chapter title doesn't move, click to the right of it, press Tab &
insert the page number control at the right margin. If the ch. Title does
move, press Tab first to move it back to the center.

j,

Thanks for getting back. Could you send a signed hard copy of that old
version of "Bend Word to Your Will"? It will be a valuable museum piece!
;-)

I use "Bend Word to Your Will" myself when I'm too tired to remember all the
grinding details ...

Cheers
Clive
