Location of DWT component files

I am having problems with DWTs. Those I have acquired with installation
packages install themselves all of the drive and show up in FrontPage 2003.

I have created the necessary DWT files and allocated the editable areas in
all of the templates in question.

Those acquired without an install routine attached are causing problems. I
have visited an untold number of sites that put forward theories as to where
on the drive the files should reside. I have tried all of the locations.
Whereas I can find the files by browsing, they do not appear automatically
under the various tabs on the templates selection dialogue(s).

If you means FP2003 Dynamic Web Templates that you have created, it's wherever you want to save them (in the web, or a subweb, or
local folder, etc)
Otherwise std templates are usually in the default location:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\

Hi Pharos,

If I understand you correctly, DWT files will not show up in your New Page
Templates by design. The naming is a bit confusing, but these are meant to
be used inside individual sites, and therefore intended to be imported into
your web site and then applied to pages within that site.

So if you've created some DWT files, simply open a new site in FrontPage and
import them into your site, then use the Format tools to apply them to
pages.

The only real alternative for you is to save them as a .TEM file using the
Save As dialog. Then they will show up as Template pages in your new page
dialog, but they will have to then be saved as .DWT files anyway inside your
site.

I hope I am making sense for you.

Thanks that does make rather more sense. I had understood the need to import
and attach but was hoping that a thumbnail of the template would be visible
for selection. Currently I have to depend on my memory of what each template
looks like, with close to 200 templates this is a little difficult at times.

If they are just various page templates create a 256 color 110 (w) x 124 (h) px bitmap image of each (use a screen shot) and save it
as a .dib file in the template folder. Also add a description of your template in the .inf file

For examples see any of the default templates in
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\1033\PAGES or
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\1033\PAGES11
