Location of User Template

Does anyone know Microsoft's recommendation on the location of the user
template folder? My understanding is that ideally it should be in the
same location as the application itself (ie if Word is running off a
server then the normal.dot should be on the server and if Word is on
the PC then the normal.dot should be on the pc also).

I ask because I'm helping a firm which is using a third party
application that does document automation with Word. The third party
instructs people to change the user template location to their own
template directory on the server. I've advised against this and have
changed the user template location back to the c:\ drive -this hasn't
affected the document automation in any way.

Besides the fact that it stops people having their own autotext entries
etc, are there any other reasons the user template location should be
on the pc? I have worked on a client site where the location was on
the server and Word kept crashing - this stopped once we changed the
user template location to the pc.

Thanks
Tammy
