Lock Cells In A Table???

Word2007

In a Word2007 table, is there a way to lock cells so that if a cell has
something in it, it can not be modified or if a cell is blank, nothing can
be entered into the cell?

Thanks!

In Word alone, only by protecting the document for filling in forms. If you
insert an Excel Spreadsheet to use as your table, you have more flexibility.

W2007 has a new feature that may work for you. Try this:
Select the _characters_ in the cell you want to prevent editing in. Go to
Developer tab > Controls group > Group icon. Click the arrow next to the
icon and select Group. If you have selected the cell, the group icon will be
unavailable, but if you select all the characters in the the cell, it will be.

The resulting characters will be uneditable and when you try, the message in
the status bar will say: This modification is not allowed because the
selection is locked.

Since there's no password protection and anyone in the know can ungroup the
text, this method will just prevent accidental entries. Another thing to
consider is that this is a W2007 feature that, I believe, is not transferred
if the file is converted to W2003.

In versions before 2007 from the Tools menu, select Protect. In 2007, on
the Developer tab, click on Protect Document.
