Lock task ID to specific task

Is it possible to lock the generated task ID to it's respective task so that
it does not change even if a previous task is deleted? I thought if I
unlocked the ID column the assigned numbers would not change, but they still
renumbered all tasks beyond the deleted task.

Hi ccgsuper ,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

No, it is not possible. However, Project does assign an UniqueID to every
task which doesn't change. You can use that firel. Another option is to
copy the ID column to an empty field like Text1 and use that, as Project
will not change those numbers.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

That's kinda what I figured. Will probably create the additional column as
the work around.
Thanks for the help.

ccgsuper,
I don't know what you are using the ID for, but you might consider the
Unique ID. In our Integrated Master Schedule, I track certain tasks
(major reviews, tests, product deliveries etc) from supplier/vendor
schedules. In order to ensure that I am tracking the correct task, I
use their Unique ID to update my Master Schedule.

Sorry, that should read "You can use that field"! I was surprised the
spellchecker didn't pick up my bit of finger trouble :)

To make a long story short, the data from the schedule is exported (actually,
cut and pasted) to an excel file for further analysis. The key is that the
lookups used in the excel file look for that ID. If anything changes in the
Project file (i.e. move, delete a task, etc.), the the entire lookup routine
will be off. The unique ID column would work fine if it were included in the
cut and paste operation.

Thanks for the input.

A solution - Export the Unique ID. If the lookup produces #NA, you
know that the task was deleted. If you get lots of #NAs you know that
probably it is a new project (sometimes people will start over with a
new project, cut and paste from one to another, etc and save the new
project with the same title/name).
