locked file will not open

Excel 2000 on Win 98

I had 2 large workbooks open. Saved one, switched to second, Excel crashed. Now I cannot open second file. "File is locked" by another user. Advises me to wait until other user is finished. PC is standalone desktop, there is no other user.
How can I tell Excel that it's OK for me to open the file and update it?
Thanks in advance for the solution.

(I tried to post this last night when the problem happened, but this service was not functioning correctly and did not accept the post.)

Look at my post of Nov 17, from me, GW about Windows XP
and Excel.

It is more related to network issues but it sounds about
the same. Let me know on (e-mail address removed) please if it
works.
