Locking chapter numbers

Is there a way to prevent style numbering from updating in
Word 2002? I would like my chapter numbers to not change
if I remove a chapter. I also have a style I made with one
of the built-in numbering schemes and I would like to be
able to make those numbers not update too. Neither
Ctrl+Shft+F9 nor Ctrl+F11 seems to work.

Thanks.

If you want to convert all of Word's auto numbering to plain text, you
can use the Visual Basic Editor. Press ALT+F11 to display the editor.
On the View menu, click Immediate Window. In the Immediate Window,
type

ActiveDocument.ConvertNumbersToText

and press ENTER. All of the autonumbered text (numbered lists, outline
numbered lists, and LISTNUM fields) will lose their numbering
formatting and the currently displayed numbers will be converted to
plain text. Note that if numbering was applied with styles, you must
also remove it from the style definition.
