Hi,
Can anyone let me know if there is an option to lock or protect tables
within Access.
If so .......
Can locked tables be updated ?
Can locked tables be used in a query for example ?
What you can do is establish Access security on your database. This
requires everyone using the database to log on as a particular ID
(this can be automated so it's not too intrusive); you can set it up
so that people in the Users group can't change anything, just read
those tables or queries that you want to allow them to see; members of
the DataEntry group can enter and edit data; but only Administrators
(you, that is, plus one or more trusted backups) can change the design
of anything.
Security is pretty effective, but also fairly complex. Get the Access
Security Whitepaper from Microsoft: see a discussion at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=305542
and/or download the Security White Paper from the link at the bottom
of the article (or from the CompuServe forum in my .sig, search the
Library for SECFAQ2K.ZIP).
Read the whitepaper. Read it - AGAIN, carefully. Follow the
instructions carefully. It's quite possible to either set up security
so that it's inconvenient for legitimate users and wide open to
invasion, or even so that NOBODY can get into the database. But done
right, it's user friendly and effective against anyone but a skilled
and determined hacker.
