long date notation mailmerge acces/word office 97

In an Access 97 table and query I have defined two fields
as long date notion.
After having linked a mailmerge Word 97 file to this
query, the Wordfile retrieves the short date notation.
Is there a solution to this problem? (the long date
notation is required)

The longwinded way, maybe to create seperate fields in Access for each part
of the date, or create a 'text' field in Access and 'read' the long date frm
yr date field into this, then use this field in yr merge operation.
