Long delay in opening documents

Bryan

I am running Office 2002 on XP. While Outlook is open,
there is a long delay (>30 seconds) opening documents
such as Excel, Word, and Acrobat. This occurs if the
files are opened by clicking on the document in file
explorer, internet explorer, or e-mail attachment.

If Outlook is not open, then the delay does not occur.
Also, if the file is opened directly from the application
(File-Open) there is no delay.

Any help is appreciated.

Bryan,

You did not mention which service pack you were on for Outlook, so let's
make that one of our first priorities. There were nuerous performance
patches put in SP1 & SP2 for Office XP. You can get these updates at
<http://office.microsoft.com>. However, try disabling IM Integration (Tools
-> Optione -> Other Tab) to see if that helps. Also, start Outlook in safe
mode, (Start -> Run -> "outlook /safe" -> OK) to see if it is perhaps a 3rd
party program running inside Outlook. Anti-virus programs are also
notorious for causing delays in Outlook due to their scannign fo file
attachments. Try uninstalling, or closing your Anti-Virus program first to
see if their is any improvement in yoru situation.

I find I am having the exact same problem! If I try to
open, for example, a local Excel file by double-clicking
on the file name in Windows Explorer, I can have up to
60s delay waiting for the file to open, but only when
Outlook is running. During this 60s, no activity of any
kind is occurring - no disk, no CPU, no network activity.
Same delay occurs also by simply right-clicking on a file
in Win Explorer - it can take up to 60s for the right-
click menu to appear.

If I open Excel first and try to open the file through
Excel's File/Open menu, no delay.

I am running fully updated WinXP Pro on a new Dell
Inspiron 300m. My version of Microsoft Outlook is Outlook
2000 (9.0.0.2711).

Anyone have a solution?

What we need is a list of your running processes. Ctrl-Alt-Del | Task Manager | Processes. Have that open when you experience this issue you should see your System Idle Process go to zero CPU. But we need a list of the processes so that we can see if you have anything in there that may be interfering with the process explorer.exe. That may show the use of the CPU but that's not really what we want to address. Not the thing that is using the CPU but what else you have in there that might be interfering.
