Long delay when accessing printer

I'm running Office 2007 on XP with SP3.
I have a laptop.
My wife has a desktop with a printer connected via USB to it.
I've set up that printer (via Microsoft Printer sharing) so that I can use
it from my laptop. That all works fine. That printer is the default printer
on my laptop.

I run into a problem, though, when my wife's desktop goes into Standby or is
Shutdown. For example, if I am in Word and want to print something there will
be a long (like 20 second) delay while Word is 'accessing printer'.
I've also experienced delays like that in Access. But in this case the delay
occurs almost as soon as I start using the Report functions. For example, as
soon as I go into Report/Design there will be a long delay. If I wake up the
desktop there is no delay at all.
I also believe this may occur in some functions in Word like Page Layout.
Even though I'm not printing when I go to some of those functions I get that
long delay.

Well, that's the situation. I tried to describe it as well as I could.
Any ideas?

Hi, Randy,
I experience this issue as well, and I believe it to be a result of a
networked printer no longer being available. In my mind, this behavior is
to be expected. If your wife's computer has the printer attached and goes
into shutdown or standby, then the printer is no longer available over the
network. Her computer is acting as a print server. If you want to resolve
the issue, leave her computer on, disable standby mode, or get a dedicated
print server that you can leave on all the time.

Keep the computer the printer is attached to "Awake", or get a "network"
attached printer/print server router.
