Long filenames

I have big problems opening Word files with long file names e.g. 68
characters. I get an error message. When I shorten the file name before
opening the file, I have no problems opening them. This happens both in Word
2002 and 2003. Is there a limit/setting for how long a file name can be, and
can I change that?
