Long Time Host changed Security Settings-now I cant get in

S

Here is the readers digest version ..the longer version at the end. My
longtime FP host has changed security settings and says that unless I have a
permanent IP address, they will not permit me to edit my pages from home.
At work we use this company as our ISP so that is not an issue ..but for 8-9
years I have edited from home, and connect through a DSL line that they will
not allow. They act as though this is normal ...help ?

longer version .
I have run into a problem with my webpages host ...a reputable company we
will call ISPX that my company uses because they have a deal with them to use
them for free. I use FRONTPAGE 2003 to design and upload my pages ...and I
work from both Home and my office.

I have no problems uploading from work, where my office uses an ISPX T1 to
connect to the internet ..but from my home, I have a DSL connection, and when
I try to connect to my websites to edit them via Frontpage , the error is
that I am trying to connect through a proxy and need to get the administrator
to give me an exception. When I call ISPX tech support, they say that this
is result of tightening security ..that I am easily able to connect at work
because we use them as an ISP ..and from my home I can get an exception with
a FIXED IP address ....when I begin to read them my IP which was described to
me as Fixed, it begins with 192 and they immediately say "can't use that
...you need a PUBLIC FIXED IP address" so I am stuck not being able to work
from home at this point. I DO NOT have this problem using go-daddy or lunar
pages ...and I am looking for a asolution that does not involved leaving ISPX
because I believe that its important to my employer to continue using their
services. PLEASE HELP FIND A SOLUTION that will allow me to use my home
computer to edit via frontpage on ISPX server.

side question...---is this the future ?

Sounds like the only solution is to get a fix public IP address from your
ISP, if they make it available. If they do, I'm sure it's a higher monthly
fee.

"Is this the future?" Apparently it is ... for ISPX.

Love it when they are going to tighten security and not let
anyone know.

re: Public IP. They are 100% correct in telling you they
can't give you an exception to a 192.x.x.x address- you
would never be connected. 192 is a private IP address on
your internal network. They would need the public address,
which is what the DSL router is showing to the internet. Try
going to http://whatismyipaddress.com/ and give that IP to
ISPX.

The problem that you may come along with someday is that
most ISPs don't use static IPs fo their dial-up, cable, DSL,
et al subscribers- they use DHCP and even your 'always-on'
connection which change IPs from time to time. The ISPs;
however, usually will offer a static IP solution- but it may
cost a few more $$
