lonking an excel spreadsheet and a word document

Every time I try to link an excel spreadsheet with a word document I
copy the spreadsheet, go back to word, paste special, select link and
then try formatted text (or for that matter any other format) and get
one of two messages, word can't get the data from excel or there is
not enough memory. The latter often comes up if I have pasted the
spreadsheet without the link first. In other words, if there is
already a table in the document then there isn't enough memory to
paste again???

Hi,

It would be good if you could post back a follow-up message to this thread
as to what versions of Word, Excel, and what operating system you are using.
The advice you get may change depending upon those things.

Thanks.

I am running 10.3.2 on a G4 powerbook (latest one) and using Office X.
Since posting I have figured out how to get the data to link, but
can't get the data in as formatted text. Hence i can't fit cell sizes
to page width, etc.

Hi again,

Can you describe the step-by-step process you are using the create the
links? There are several possibilities.

Thanks.

I highlight and copy the excel spreadsheet, return to word, click
where I want the table, then go to paste special from the edit menu,
select paste link, then select the radio button for formatted text
(rtf). The message I get is "Word cannot obtain the data for the
microsoft excel worksheet link."

Again, I am running panther, 10.3.2, office x (Educators edition, but
I was assured by microsoft when I spoke with them before buying it is
identical to the regular edition, just boxed differently with three
licenses) on a new G4 powerbook.

Thanks in advance for all of your efforts in helping me with this
issue.

Hi

I just tried it with Jaguar 10.2.8 and the paste worked OK. I'll have a
panther machine next week and will try it with panther to see if that
makes a difference.

I look forward to seeing what happens when you try it on a panther
machine. For what it is worth, i have had Macs for almost 16 years. I
also have a compaq notebook. My previous mac was a G4 tower, one of
the first off the line, this is the best machine I have ever worked
with.

Thank you for all your efforts.

Hi again,

I tried this today with Panther and received the same error message that you
did. Something about Panther is causing the problem.

Please take a moment to report to Microsoft the steps you took and the error
message. They are probably unaware of this. The URL is
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/feedback/suggestion.asp

You won't receive a personal reply, but any messages sent to that address
are read by the product managers. They will open a "bug" report on it.
Hopefully you'll get the report in early enough so that this problem does
not surface in the next version of Excel. Chances of a fix for Excel X are
low, but not zero.
