Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel

I just installed Office 2004, but it's asking me to install the earlier 2001
version, of which my Mac didn't come with it. Where can I get a full version of office 2001?

Well, if Office 2004 is asking for an earlier version on install, then
you bought a discounted Upgrade Version instead of the Standard Retail
version. If you are entitled to an upgrade version, then you should have
CDs for Office 98, Office 2001, or Office X sitting around somewhere. Do
a drag-and-drop install, then point the setup assistant at the CD in the
drive. No need to actually have them installed.

Where did you get this Office 2004? Sounds like someone gave or sold
you something you can't use. You might complain to them.

If you don't have the CDs, you may be able to pick up a cheap version on
eBay or somesuch--either 98, 2001, or X should work fine.

The version 2004 upgrade is only for users who already owned a previous
version; new users were to buy a full copy of Office 2004 at a higher price.
Perhaps you can return the software and exchange it for a full version of
Office 2004. Otherwise, you may need to search for used full copies of
Office 2001 or Office X (10) to use as upgrade-eligible products.

Another option is to purchase the Office 2004 Student & Teacher Edition or
the Office 2008 Home & Student Edition if you are eligible. Neither of
those are upgrade versions and do not require a previous version to use.

Office 2004 Student Teacher contains Exchange support. Office 2008 Home and
Student does not contain Exchange support.

If you don't need Exchange you can get Office 2008 very reasonably. $129.99

It sounds like what you have is an *upgrade* package of 2004 rather than the
full version. I would first look into having the vendor exchange it for the
full version (which will of course be more expensive) rather than investing
in an older version which won't even run on your Mac. Granted you do only
need it to install the upgrade but other than that 2001 is worthless to you.

If you do have to obtain an older version your best bet is to Google for it.
It's no longer produced so it won't be available from regular etailers -
Ebay is the most likely source. Just make sure you're getting the *complete*
package including the Product Key(s).
