Looking for help on sharing presentation with linked images

I'm trying to share a presentation that has linked images I copied & pasted from another presentation. Saving it as a package doesn't accomplish this.

Is there a way to convert the linked images to embedded ones?

Is there a way to embed images from the start instead of linking them? How about turning off linking entirely, as it causes more problems than it solves?

I'm running the 12.1.5 update, and "check for updates" indicates that no updates are available.

Thanks,

Andreas

In 2008, you'd have to delete them then re-insert.

If you have access to a previous version of PPT or pretty much any Windows version, this can be automated.

If using a Windows version, the free demo of our FixLinks add-in will embed linked images:
http://www.pptools.com/fixlinks/

(if that link doesn't seem to be working, try later; ISP's having some connectivity problems at the moment)

That's the default if you use the recommended Insert, Picture, From File method.
How have you added them?

Steve,

Thanks for your quick reply.

I added them by selecting the image in the source presentation, hitting cmd-c to copy it, followed by cmd-v to paste it into the target presentation. Any advice on pasting the actual image instead of a link would be greatly appreciated! There are only six images in this presentation, so it's not a big deal to redo them.

Then it's down to how the images got into the original presentation. If they're linked
there, they'll likely stay linked when copied to another presentation.

If you have access to the original image files (not the images in PPT) I'd re-do them.

Hi,

You seem to be ruling out the correct solution. When you use File > Save
As and choose the type as PowerPoint Package instead of PowerPoint
Presentation, then PowerPoint makes a folder, copies all linked media
(pictures, sounds, movies) and puts copies of the media into the folder,
then it puts a copy of your presentation into the folder and fixes all
the links.

There were some bugs with Save As > PowerPoint Package during various
update releases of PowerPoint 2008. Make sure you have the latest update
installed.

Use the Picture button on PowerPoint's standard toolbar to insert
pictures into presentations. As long as you don't click the "Link to
File" checkbox, the pictures will be embedded, not linked.

Jim,

Thanks for the info. I searched the archives before posting and saw saving as a package mentioned a few times. That sadly didn't work with my presentation. It created a directory with a single file in it (the presentation). Opening that presentation on another computer gave an error regarding the images. I ran software update and confirmed that my Office install is up to date.

I ended up saving the images from the original presentation to my desktop and then dragging them into the new presentation. That did the trick.

Thanks for the hint regarding the picture toolbar and the "link to file" checkbox. I'll give that a shot next time.

In the mean time, I'll remain puzzled about this default behavior.

Cheers,

Andreas

Bad idea. Dragging pictures into the presentation can cause problems.

That's why we keep harping on Insert, Picture, From File.
