Sheet 1 has a list of Student names and ID#s
and a column indicating if a student is in a class of mine.
(a column for each class, some students are in more than one class)

Sheet 2 has a list of Student names and ID#s
and a column of birthdates

First problem: (I have tried several ways to solve this problem with Lookup functions but without success.)

I want to create column on sheet 1 that looks up the ID# on Sheet 2 and return the respective student's birthdate. (if the student is there, some are not)

The second problem:
I want to sort by birth month then birth day (ignoring the year, showing me who has the next birthday regardless of year born)
When try to sort Excel says:
"This operation requires the merged cells to be identically sized."
I guess there is some formating going on i dont understand.

I guess there is. Make sure there are no merged cells. If it is your
worksheet and you don't understand the formatting, how can you expect us to
do so without further explanation? For the first problem, vlookup ought to
work fine. If you tried it and it doesn't work as expected, let us know what
is happening, and the text of your formula.

Wow. No, it's not my spreadsheet. Sorry i dont know much about Excel. Just looking for a 'help' forum. What is about Microsoft and their products that brings out all this tension.

Bob, I am curious about what your motivation is in reading and responding on this forum?
