Loose my mouse-wheel scroll only with doc open in Word 2203

I'm using Word 2003, on XP-Pro
My Mouse is an intellipoint optical with Intellipoint Software ver 4.1, plugged into a usb port on my Microsoft Internet Keyboard Pro, running with Intellitype 2.21
All Windows and Office Updates (exceptiing a couple for Visio 2002 Pro) are present
With any document open for about 10 minutes.... the wheel scroll on the mouse fails.
I have a custom button config in intellipoint
- Right Mouse button = defaul
- Left Mouse button = defaul
- Wheel Button = Paste (Ctrl+V
- Left Side button = Copy (Ctrl+C
- Right Side button = Al

I've had this custom intellipoint on at least 6 different PCs and for well over a 2 years each. The wheel scrolling never became an issue when the wheel button was assigned a different task. Something about Word 2003 doesn't jive with it after a doc has been navigated to some random extent. Thanks for any feedback or investigation given.

Intellipoint v5 seems to resolve the problem.
