Losing cross references

Hi.

I have a document (Word2000 SP-3 under Win2000) with several cross
references to different figure captions. From time to time, all or
some of the cross references are lost and replaced by "Error! Bookmark
not defined". This occurs most often when I insert a new figure
between existing figures so that some of them are re-numbered.

This is an increasingly annoying problem, since the number of cross
references keep growing. Any hints on how to avoid it would be highly
appreciated!
