Losing formatting on Excel

I run Excel'97 2004 workbook on Excel'11(version 14) with my Apple Macbook Air OsX.8.2 laptop.

I have recently found that whenever I save a sheet I lose some of the formatting, like shading, lines or borders etc..

Can anyone please tell me what I should do to correct this please? Could it be I need to update the Excel sheets to a newer version? If so how should I go about doing this?

Any advice would be most gratefully received.

It depends which direction you go!

Later version files will typically get stripped of any features not
supported in early versions when said later version file is opened in
an earlier version.

Later versions run in 'Compatibility Mode' when early version files are
opened.

Behavior/results can get wonky at times, but usually this works fine in
most cases. Since you're talking a Mac version of Excel then all bets
are off if the early file was created in a Windows version of Excel. I
can't speak to whether the incompatible anomolies have been fixed yet
or not, but some years ago I got reports of problems opening Win files
on Macs. I do know there's a way to run Windows on Macs in a vm
environment. Makes me curious why they would do this!!!
