losing word document to notepad while typing

while typing document in word it will change into a notepad document and all
information will be lost in word. I have to type a few words and then save
document in order to not lose all of my work

I can't understand this problem description. If it turns into a Notepad
document, why is all the information lost? Please try explaining a little
clearer and let us know which version of Word and which OS please.
