Loss of Data Merge Capability in Word

Can anyone shed any light on why I suddenly lost the Data
Merge capability in my MS Word (Mac vX)? It has been
working fine for a few months and now, all of a sudden,
the special Tools>Data Merge formatting menu fails to show
up. All other Word features seem to work fine. I'm using
Office v.X on an older 350 Mhz iMac with 640 RAM.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.
