Loss of files during saving

My word 2003 version and the Office 2003 in general very frequently stop
responding. I have a brand new HP and unfortunately the Windows Vista as an
OS that I consider as a major flop. I am very tempted to re-format my
computer and install a more reliable OS. Today I lost a huge word file from
my removable disk F: that I was trying to save because the Word stopped
responding and not only it was not saved in the Temp files but in addition
the original disappeared in the chaos of bad informatics. I seriously think
that Microsoft is going to the worse although you may think that you are
becoming wiser as computer engineers.
Every "improvement" that you may think you are doing frustrates more and
more the PC users.

It's a little late now, but something MVPs harp on at every opportunity is
to NEVER save from Word to a removable disk. It's a sure-fire recipe for
data loss and corruption. Always save to your hard drive, close the file in
Word, and then use Windows Explorer to copy the file to the removable drive.

We definitely do 'harp on' about it: but this is more proof that you should
not save to removable media. <g>

No. This is solely removable drives such as CDR, Tapes, USB memory, floppies
(for the few still remaining). External HDDs, especially the eSATA versions
seem much more reliable, but I would use them with caution.

Herb,

Is there any way to get the lost data back?

After the error, a dialog box came up which said "Data has been lost from
Word. Files relying on this will be saved and closed." Then at the bottom, on
the status bar, it said 'Word is saving Rescued Document', before it closed.
Has it saved somewhere?

Thank you.

Typically, the file would have a name ending in .asd and would be opened
automatically the next time Word starts. Such files would be located in the
location specified in Tools - Options - File Locations - AutoRecover Files.

When Word closes normally, .asd files are deleted, so if you've used Word in
the meantime, it's possible that the .asd file isn't there anymore. But,
it's worth taking a look.
