loss of font settings

After filing some email attachments which have different normal
settings I have lost all original settings for my word documents on
the hard drive. How do I undo this and revert to the originals. Can I
stop it happening again. Any help appreciated.

What version of Word and OS? What settings specifically have you lost? What
were the original settings? What do you mean by "filing"?

I'm running Word X for Mac, and the Jaguar OS. The lost settings are
font settings - specifically the type size has reverted to that in the
emailed attachments. Originally 9 point, now 10 point. Though, I'm
sure if the type face in the attachments had differed, that would have
changed in my own documents as well. By filing I just mean that I took
the attachments out of the email programme and dragged them to folders
on my HD.

Okay. In any Word doc, go to Format | Font, set what you like, then click
Default.... Say yes to the resulting message.

Then go to Format | Style, select Normal in the left column, click Modify,
uncheck the "automatically update settting", click OK. I believe that's the
setting that reset your default.

That should return all documents created henceforth to the settings you
want. When you are in the Format Style dialog, make sure that the
definition of Normal (which is usually the default style for text in a new
doc) matches what you want the text of a new doc to be. If older documents
have changed, you can uncheck "automatically update" for them as well and
change them back.

PS. Consider that 9pt default text may be a tad harder on your eyes than is
a good idea.

Thanks for that. I had concluded the same thing. Unfortunately it
doesn't seem to work. I managed somehow to get all text settings
restored, but the moment I opened one of the emailed documents
everything reverted and no amount of default setting will alter
anything. There must be something more fundamental than setting a
default via the format menu. I will however persevere.

Hi VY,

Next time you paste the contents of one of these emails into a Word doc, use
Paste Special (on the Edit menu) and paste as unformatted text.

I also suggest that you rename your Normal template (with Word closed) and
let Word create a new, fresh Normal when you relaunch it. You will then
have to reset any customizations to Normal (like the default font). If
everything is okay, go ahead and trash the old Normal.

Yep, that's cause I misled you. I had the wrong setting as the cause of the
change. My apologies. Go to Tools | Templates and Add-ins, and in that box,
it should show "Normal" at the top, and *then* uncheck "automatically update
document styles."
