Loss of text boxes in compatability mode

I have recently migrated to Word 2007, but need to use it in the 2003
compatability mode to transfer documents to other computers (all using
Windows XP) - I am creating simple diagrams of multiple text boxes and arrows
in one document and then pasting into others (after grouping). Sometimes the
diagrams do not survive the transfer to other computers (arrows missing, text
boxes empty, etc.) - this seems sporadic depending on the file.

I have tried several paste special options, starting with diagrams created
both in a drawing canvas and diagrams created directly on the page, and
pasting both into a drawing canvas and directly onto a page. When I create
test files of one diagram pasted 7 or 8 different ways, it transfers, opens
and prints OK. When I put the same diagram as the only figure in a 25 page
document (created in Word 2007 in compatability with Word 2003 mode), the
diagram gets corrupted no matter how it is prepared and pasted.

I can find no explanation for this. Can anyone help?
