This is a secondhand CLEANED mac
where or what do I do to get it back, I really could use some good(real) advice,
being a dummy book reader.
how can i get it back, this is just an entertainment machine for me, BUT, MS is an integral part of the set up, isn't it

thanks in advance

You need to reinstall from your original Office CD or buy Office if you
never had it. Microsoft Office does not come pre-installed by default.

Hi Pete,

I'll keep it as simple as I can. In order to be able to use the Microsoft
Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Entourage), you have to
install them. To install them, you have to purchase a Microsoft Office CD.
And that's it. If you don't understand this, you'll have to be more
explicit about what your problem is.

Pete -

Beth did answer your question completely (twice), but I don't think you had
the background to know how her answer applied. Hope this can help...

The short and easy answer to the direct question you asked is, "No." MS is
not "an integral part of the setup." It's something you have to buy from MS
and install.

The only Word processing that is "a part of the setup" is TextEdit, which is
primitive, but will let you write and print formatted text.

There is no spread sheet capability built into the Mac OS.

Seems pretty likely you think you paid for Office when you bought the Mac.

If that was your agreement with the owner, you should have received
installation CDs and the installation keys (passwords) information so you
could transfer the registration.

Without them you don't own Office. Everything might be all right for a
while, but you have no way to correct things if something goes wrong - as it
seems is the case.

Go back to the person who sold you the Mac and see if Office was part of the
deal.

My guess is that Office was left on the drive because the previous owner
didn't know any better or didn't care about the legalities.

If you do have the CDs, it's easy to get installation instructions.

Best,

- Bill

Hit apple-F and run a search for "Microsoft Word" (without quotes) on your
machine. Look for an entry where Kind="application program." It doesn't
just vanish by itself. Unless you deleted it, it is still there. Perhaps
you had icons for it on your desktop that are gone, but those should have
just been shortcuts/aliases, not the actual program.

i do nknow the diff. between actual & alias, I had actual, to the point of losing all my aa/ca file
in the appartment file. I might be a dummy, but I'm a canadian (from quebec) and not stupid
[yet]. The app. was not bogus, it just came with the machine, it worked & I thought leglly I could use it. simple as that, im not pleading ignorance, just willing to accept responsibilty.

I was interpreting "new at this" in your original post as new to macs,
didn't mean to insult your intelligence.

If the program was there, and you were using it for 3 months, how did it
vanish? I'm sure you had the actual application, but what did you mean by
"lost" in your original post?

WinWord will stop working if not activated, but MacWord has no such thing.
Also, what Office version are you talking about here? You say you are in OS
9.2? For OS X, Office X and Office 2004 had Test Drives that will stop
working when they expired, but I don't think any OS 9 versions did.

what's MS's policy if you buy an upgrade to Office 2004 from Office2001 pay for then
purchase a PowerBook.

Your the only one that would use either.

Do you still have to purchase another copy even though both machines are yours and
you are the only that would be using them, and the only time they would be connected
in anyway together is if you connect them both to the same ethernet switch used for
you DSL Connection, so that you can transfer files over to the PowerBook you would
normally work on on the G4.

I need to pose this situation to MS for Office, Adobe for Acrobat 6.0.x, Macromedia
for DreamWeaver, and Intuit for Quicken.

All the files minipulated by these programs are associated with work I do with a
Non-Profit Corporation (Service Association) as Treasurer/Assistant WebMaster/ByLaws
and working rules Committe member/Convention Committee Member

The answers may decide whether I purchase a Notebook computer or not, would have to
plan for an additional $2K in investment it, just to be able to use it.

You’re welcome. This happens all the time. Sorry it was a shock to you,
but it’s easy to understand why it would be.

You deserve credit for your reaction too. I have known people to become
incensed that Microsoft would dare to charge “extra” for their software.

If you by any chance are connected to an educational institution, you
can get Office at a considerable discount. That’s something to know.

The usual Office license lets you install it on a desktop and a laptop, but
only one of the copies may be open at the same time. MS does not attempt
to force people to buy a second license just to be able to work on their
laptop. There is no activation required, but upon opening, I believe Office
searches for the same copy open on the local network, to enforce this. I
don't think having an upgrade license makes a difference.

Don't know about the other companies.

My experience is the same as Dayo's. I am confident you can install on both
computers and use either but not both at the same time.

Bill and Dayo,

Thanks at least that helps some. I can't see a time where iwould actuall have both
open at the same time whether on a network or not.
