Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: intel

A few days ago my computer asked me if I wanted to do an upgrade to 2008? When I said yes it started the process but quit in the middle. I not only was unable to get 2008 installed but loss 2004. When I click on the icons on my dock I just get a question mark. The Applications folder shows the file folder for the program but is empty on the inside.

Any suggestions on I can retrieve my program or at least get a program to work?

Hi Michael:

You need to go to the Applications folder and remove the folders "Microsoft
Office 2004" and "Microsoft Office 2008"

Now go to User/Library/Preferences/ and remove everything with "Microsoft"
in its name.

Then go to ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft and take out the whole folder!

Now put your CD in the slot and start a new install from scratch.

When you have finished, you need to re-run Microsoft Software Update as
often as it takes to get fully updated (there will be either two or three
updates).

Cheers

Hey John - Why would there be any attempt even suggeed to "upgrade" *2004*
to *2008*??? I've never heard of any such occurrence and don't understand
why the computer would even "ask" such a question of make such an offer.

The only update that should have been located for 2004 is 11.5, no?

Good question :)

That's why I suggested that he blow it all away and start again. Whatever
is going on in that computer can only end in tears...

It may be that he stuck Office 2008 in the hole and it offered to "upgrade
2004", and then blew up.

Or it may be that some other piece of SmartArseWare he downloaded has
gotten involved. Either way, we want to rake out the smouldering remains
and start a nice clean install.

That was my thinking, anyway...

I did a nice clean install...well, upgraded to 2004 11.5, but now Word is hanging on "save as" and even on boot up. I also went to Disk Utilities and did a repair disk procedure, both repairing and verifying permissions, but the glitch remains. This is REALLY annoying; I thought Mac and MS people worked out these glitches before they offered updates!

Well, you're a different poster, so we need you to start your own question
so we get all your system information.

Then, we need a detailed step-by-step description of what you have done so
far.

For example: You say it hangs on "Save As" but not on "Save"? That's a new
issue we will have to track down: we have never seen that before and neither
has Microsoft.

When you say "Hang", what exactly do you mean? Have a look at your disk
stats in Perf Mon. What's happening?

Cheers
