lossing formats after "find file"

if i perform a "find file" in the "open" menu, then I loose the decimals in
all open spreadsheets, and any new spreadsheet I open also has no
decimals. i.e. 0.005 looks like 0005 and behaves as text. I cannot
convert it back to numbers, and any math action is invalid because all
cells are now text. I have to quit Excel and restart in order to recover
the formats in the spreadsheets
Any one seen this?
