lost ability to overwrite highlighted text

Using Office (2003) and seem to have lost ability in Word and other packages
to overwrite highlighted text (i.e. have to physically press the delete
button). Doesn't sound like a big deal, but when you are editing long
documents its is a hassle.

Any tips on how to get back to original settings gratefully received!

If it's just Word (and Outlook, if you're using Word as the email editor),
go to Tools > Options > Edit and check "Typing replaces selection". For the
unspecified other packages, you'll need some other help.
